Eskom says load-shedding will be reduced to stage 3 as from 5am on Wednesday.

The power utility says stage 2 will be implemented from 5am on Friday morning until load-shedding is lifted on Saturday.

De Ruyter says letters have been drafted to all the affected municipalities to correct the situation with all future load-shedding scenarios which may occur.

Eskom Media Briefing:

He says the municipalities which Eskom supplies have not fulfilled load-shedding requirements apart from Ethekwini and Buffalo City…

UN says at least 16 staff, dependents detained in Ethiopia

At least 16 United Nations staff and dependents have been detained in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, a UN spokesperson said on Tuesday, amid reports of widespread arrests of ethnic Tigrayans.

“We are, of course, actively working with the government of Ethiopia to secure their immediate release,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters in New York.

He declined to answer a question on the ethnicity of those detained, saying: “These are United Nations staff members, they’re Ethiopians…, and we would like to see them released, whatever ethnicity is listed on their identity cards.”

The state-appointed Ethiopian Human Rights Commission said on Sunday it had received many reports of arrests of Tigrayans in the capital, including elders and mothers with children.

Daniel Bekele, head of the commission, told Reuters on Tuesday that it was monitoring “the arrests of hundreds of Tigrayans in Addis Ababa”.

Police have denied making ethnically motivated arrests, saying they are only targeting supporters of the rebellious Tigrayan forces fighting the central government.

Fasika Fanta, spokesperson for the Addis Ababa police, and government spokesperson Legesse Tulu told Reuters they had no information on the arrests of UN staff.

“Those that have been detained are Ethiopians who violate the law,” said Legesse.

The US State Department said Washington finds the reports of arrests of UN staff members “concerning”, adding that harassment and detention on the basis of ethnicity is completely unacceptable.

“The reports do tend to suggest an arrest based on ethnicity and that is something that if confirmed, we would strongly condemn. So, whatever we can do to secure the release of these individuals, we will be prepared to do,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters.

The year-long conflict in northern Ethiopia between the government and Tigrayan forces loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has intensified in recent weeks after the TPLF pushed southward.

Tigrayan forces and their allies have threatened to march on the capital.

Ethiopia declared a state of emergency on November 2. That permits the government to arbitrarily arrest, without a court order, anyone suspected of collaborating with a terrorist group.

Parliament designated the TPLF as a terrorist group earlier this year.

Britain tightened its travel advice on Tuesday, advising citizens to leave Ethiopia while commercial flights are available, after the United States on November 5 advised all citizens to leave Ethiopia as soon as possible.

Zambia evacuated non-essential staff from Ethiopia on Tuesday, its foreign ministry said.

Diplomatic efforts continue to try to lay the ground for talks and avert an attack on the Ethiopian capital, home to 5 million people.

“Our position remains that there can be no military solution to this conflict and only dialogue can produce a lasting peace, “Britain’s Minister for Africa, Vicky Ford, told journalists.

Former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo is in Ethiopia on behalf of the African Union to try to facilitate talks:

Tributes pour in for former leader of AmaZulu regiment Mlandeni Mgilija Nhleko

Tributes are pouring in for the former leader of the AmaZulu regiment, Mlandeni Mgilija Nhleko. He died last night at the St Benedict Hospital in Nongoma, where he was treated for a stress-related illness and TB.

Nhleko was criticised for leading regiments to Nkandla the Sunday before former president Jacob Zuma handed himself over to police, in July.

He was reportedly fired as leader of the Zulu regiment after allegedly questioning the authority of the current AmaZulu King, Misuzulu kaZwelithini.

Nhleko came into the national spotlight months before July, he made the presence of the regiment felt as he led them when they accompanied the remains of late Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu from the CBD – to the KwaKhethomthandayo Palace in Nongoma.

The news of his passing came as a shock to those who had fallen in love with his firm leadership style and charisma.
His brother Sethi Nhleko says the former AmaZulu regiment leader’s health took a knock after the demise of the King.

“Since I was born into my adulthood, I have never seen my brother sick, it was a shock even seeing him crying after the demise of our King. He was devastated but as preparations were done to inter the King. We observed how he worked hard, we believe that is where his health took a knock and he was also depressed.”

Amabutho accompanying King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu to KwaKhethomthandayo Palace:

Cultural expert from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Professor Sihawu Ngubane says Nhleko’s role was critical in serving the AmaZulu King and the nation. Ngubane says in the role of a regiment commander has always been important in the history of the AmaZulu nation.

“But his role has always been there as rendering service to his Majesty, His Majesty would not move without uMgilija, uMgilija was the leader or the Commander in Chief of Amabutho and Amabutho in the history of the Zulu nation were a prerogative of the Kings, not the Chiefs because they are like the army you recruit and mobilise them and they serve the King. And we remember that during the passing on of His Majesty they played a very major role and uMgilija was in the forefront of that role their main service to protect the King.”

Meanwhile, Ngubane says the criticism that Nhleko received for leading some of the members of the regiment to the home of Zuma in Nkandla, in a show of show solidarity, might be among the reasons for his depression.

“I think when he appeared in Nkandla his course came under scrutiny by most people because there was a claim that he was not permitted to go and support the former president Msholozi so since then he was no longer eager to be in the media. He was very disappointed about the act, it affected him, I think it led to depression. I think that could have led to his passing on. “

Social media platforms were also flooded with messages of condolence.

Many remember Nhleko’s sense of humour and his strategy in avoiding answering questions from the media about what was happening inside the Zulu Royal Household.
