Sadtu concerned about school dropouts rate amid COVID-19 pandemic

Teachers’ union Sadtu says it is deeply concerned about the school dropout rate amid the continuing COVID 19 pandemic.

This comes amid reports recently that as many as 750 000 learners may have dropped out of school.

The union says the African National Congress (ANC) led government needs to do more to support public schools where learners are bearing the brunt of the dropout rate.

In the video below, impact of COVID-19 on schools under spotlight:

On Saturday last week Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said that her department was ready to welcome learners back at schools.

Sadtu’s General Secretary Mgwena Maluleke said school management teams went back to work last Thursday.

“Education is an enabler and there is no economic recovery unless education is prioritised and our learners have already lost so much time and that we should be able to support our teachers to be safe at their schools an the other working people.

We feel strongly as Sadtu that the question of whether ready or not ready is really not fair because other people are working,” says Maluleke.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) residents said they believe that the reopening of schools will help children cope mentally especially after the recent unrest in the province and in Gauteng.

“May they open and may there be a peaceful transaction. I have two children at home they are going crazy. We need life to go back to normal. Things need to happen and we need to be preventative and take precautions.

We can’t kill our economy and starve millions as we have seen in the unrest. I feel it will just get worse,” sais a parent.

Mali’s interim government mindful of fixed election timeline

Mali’s transitional government is conscious of its commitment to a fixed deadline for arranging elections to restore democracy after last year’s coup, Prime Minister Choguel Maiga said on Friday.

Since a junta toppled President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in August 2020, political factions in Mali and foreign partners have been watching to see if the military-led interim authorities will stick to a promise to hold elections within 18 months.

Presenting the interim government’s action plan, Maiga outlined four key policy areas, which included delivering transparent and credible elections after the creation of a new electoral body.

“In respect of the fixed timeline for the transition and our international commitments, the single election management body will follow a simple implementation process,” he said without confirming any election dates.

Regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union have suspended Mali from their organisations, but declined to impose further sanctions while repeatedly urging the authorities to hold the votes on schedule.

The transitional government said in April it would hold a referendum on October 31, council elections on December 26, and legislative and presidential elections on February 27.

“These elections will be the barometer of the success of the transition,” he said.

The path to legislative and presidential elections in February 2022 has already been complicated by a second coup in May, when a leader in the first coup – Colonel Assimi Goita – ousted transitional leader Bah Ndaw to become interim President.

There are concerns key reforms and electoral processes may not be implemented in time, which could require an extension of the transitional authorities’ powers.
