The South African Students’ Congress (SASCO) is expected to embark on a national day of action on Wednesday – to raise awareness over, what it calls, a dire condition of TVET colleges across the country.

The student body says its march will include visits to premiers’ offices across all nine provinces – including protest action at the Union Building in Pretoria.

The students allege that TVET colleges do not receive the same attention and resources that are directed at university students.

“The national day of action is prompted by what the student movement has been saying for years – government only says that it want institutions of higher learning, or TVETs to be specific, to be institutions of choice but never allocates the resources or energy to do so. TVETS across the country are in a dire situation. They have buildings that are collapsing, TVET students don’t have accommodation that is afforded to students in universities. We don’t want to continue to listen to the lip service of government when it comes to the beginning of every academic year. We want government to act now,” says Luyolo Barnes, SASCO’s Spokesperson.

Police Minister Bheki Cele says his department is working on assisting farmers and law enforcement officials to work together to avoid stock theft and farm violence.

Cele and State Security Minister, Ayanda Dlodlo, met with farmers in the Free State on Tuesday, following violent protests in Senekal.

This comes ahead of the bail application of two suspects accused of the murder of farm manager, Brendin Horner.

SABC News’ Aphumelele Mdlalane elaborates on the case and the Ministers’ visit:

Cele says farmers and police need to work together to stop violent attacks.

“There is a big will for police and the farming community to work together, especially on the very troubling issue of the stock theft and that is happening to all farmers. It is on that issue that we have agreed to go back there and see how do we work on matters of three police stations that they have raised,” explains Cele.

Meanwhile, farmers in the Eastern Free State say they lose over a million rand a month due to stock theft.

Women and Men against Child Abuse says it would have liked to have seen a heftier sentence for the woman caught on camera assaulting three children at a creche in Carletonville, west of Johannesburg.

Nelly Senwametsi (42) was sentenced to 5 years behind bars by the Oberholzer Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Senwametsi had been convicted on two counts of assault and one count of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

NGO spokesperson, Ngaa Morubedzi says, “As women and men against child abuse, we are pleased with even the 5-year sentence. I know we had called for 10 years. However, as the Magistrate [Jan Steyn] put forward with all other factors considered and given that in cases where there was no GBH charge, she would have walked away.”

“The 5-year sentence is at least enough to communicate and begin to set a precedent for our communities to say you know what, you don’t get away with beating children. But what we [would] have liked to see is a heftier punishment,” adds Morubedzi.

The state in the Pastor Timothy Omotoso rape case says there’s a strong possibility that the accused would be deported if he is granted bail.

The state and defence are at loggerheads over Omotoso’s documentation, after he was declared a prohibited person by Home Affairs.

This is the third bail application, forcing the postponement of the trial. Omotoso and two co-accused are charged with more that 90 sex-related charges including human trafficking, rape and sexual assault.

Investigating officer of the Hawks, warrant officer Peter Plaatjies said since Omotoso’s arrest in April 2017, they could not get hold of his two passports. They are in the possession of his attorney, and they were only given copies thereof.

Defence advocate Terry Price argued that an illegal foreigner may be granted bail, with strict conditions and then the Dept of Home Affairs would have no say.

Meanwhile, the threatening messages received by some victims must still be translated from various African languages.
