South Africa has recorded 777 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the country’s total cases to 1 551 501.
The death toll has climbed to 52 954 after eight new deaths were reported on Saturday night.
Most of the new fatalities are from the Free State, which has recorded three deaths.
“Today, eight more COVID-19 related deaths have been reported: Eastern Cape 0, Free State three, Gauteng one, KwaZulu-Natal two, Limpopo 0, Mpumalanga 0, North West 0, Northern Cape one and Western Cape one: this brings the total to 52 954 deaths. We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the health care workers who treated the deceased.” says Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, in a statement.

Tests and recoveries
South Africa has conducted 9 956 086 tests so far, with 16 391 tests conducted in the last 24-hour cycle.
The private sector accounts for 56% (5 589 530) of total tests, while the public sector accounts for 44% (4 366 556).
The country’s recoveries stand at 1 476 605, with a recovery rate of 95%.
The number of healthcare workers vaccinated under the Sisonke Protocol currently stands at 269 102.
